Will GM/UAW strike save the Cadillac CT6?

Will GM/UAW strike save the Cadillac CT6?

Detroit-Hamtramck and Lordstown, Ohio assembly plants of General Motors play an important part in the current United Auto Workers strike. Around 49,000 members went on strike against the GM on Monday morning. Among these, the Hamtramck plant gives the new hopes for the GM Cadillac CT6 which was being criticized to shut.

Before this, the General Motors was in the middle of talks to sell Hamtramck plant but as reported to keep it open to make an electric pickup truck there as part of last-minute bargaining just before the workers hit the strike.

The automaker had transferred 593 workers from Detroit-Hamtramck to other locations by the end of April 2019. The plant assembled the last Buick LaCrosses and Chevrolet Volts. And after this only 700 workers remained at the plant to assemble Cadillac CT6 and Chevy Impala sedans.

Now the question arises, Will the UAW strike saves the Cadillac CT6? The answer seems hazy. As for now, General Motors have completed a small run of 2019 Cadillac CT6-V. The full-size sport sedan comes for $90,000-plus, include a hand-built 4.2-litre twin-turbo "Blackwing" V-8 rated engine producing for 550 PS of power and 867 of peak torque.

The production was scheduled to end when the Hamtramck plant closed in January 2020. On this, the company officials state that they could not locate a new assembly plant to make CT6, including variants powered by the 500 PS Blackwing or GM's 3.6-litre and twin-turbo 3.0-litre V-6s.

Now the future of the 2020 Cadillac CT6 lies on the current bargaining of the UAW and General Motors and the survival of Detroit-Hamtramck, which depends on so many variables. The plant has always been known for its sufficient flexibility to build big Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac sedans as well as the electrified Volt. Though the starting production of the electric pick up from the plant could be low.
