GM, FCA and Toyota support Trump administration on emissions rollback

In California emissions standards fight, the three big carmakers namely General Motors, Toyota and Fiat Chrysler are now siding with the Trump administration. The lawsuit is concerned with the rights of California to set its own greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy standards.

The three firms and a trade association known as Association of Global Automakers, stated that they aim to intervene in the lawsuit filed by the Environmental Defense Fund against the administration, which is planning to roll back national pollution and gas mileage standards enacted under the Obama administration.

Earlier, several automakers were in favour to have one standard and planned that Trump administration and California will work out to develop it. But nothing such happened and in September, President Donald Trump announced his administration would seek to cancel California’s granted authority to set standards that are more strict than those issued by federal regulators.

The move of GM, FCA, and Toyota is against the other powerful automakers Ford, BMW, Honda, and VW who are tied with state’s rights and it results in splitting the industry. But how these firms actually feel about the Trump administration’s rollback is not yet reported. Though it is somewhere applied that supporting the federal side means supporting the rollback. Ironically, it is said that Toyota is a leader in the hybrid segment that's why supporting the administration 

John Bozzella, president of the Association of Global Automakers and a spokesperson for the coalition, said that the companies intervening are not necessarily endorsing a White House proposal that would essentially freeze fuel standards enacted during the Obama administration. He further added, “What the group wants is for California and the federal government to forge a compromise on one national set of fuel-economy standards -- a compromise that so far has been nowhere in sight.”
