2020 BMW M550i, X3 & X4 M40i get a power increase

BMW has just brought the updated M550i, X3 M40i, and X4 M40i models for 2020. Along with numerous hardware upgrades, the three BMWs now pack in more power under their hoods than ever before. While the introduction of the newer models transpired rather quietly without much revel, the three German cars do come with big updates, especially in terms of power.

Starting off with the X3 M40i and the X4 M40i SUVs, both the German cars have received a 5% increase in power. Thanks to higher than before boost pressure, revamped ECU, and improved exhaust components, the SUVs now receive 382 hp of maximum power from their S58 3.0-litre straight-six engine, which earlier produced 335 hp.

Having a look at the performance figures, both the 2020 BMW X3 M40i and the X4 M40i SUVs are now capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds. The same S58 3.0-litre straight-six engine also powers the likes of the 540i, X6, 740i, and 840i, albeit with low power output. As for the G30 M550i, the sedan is powered by a revisited N63 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 motor generating 523 hp of maximum power and 750 Nm of peak torque. It is the same mill that also powers the M850i. Responsible for this bump in the power output comes courtesy of higher fuel pressure, stronger than before engine block, reinforced pistons, brand-new ECU, and brand-new intake manifold & ports. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system continues to make its way to the G30 M550i, and the sedan can do a 0 - 100 kmph run in 4.0 seconds.

As far as the pricing of the 2020 model year is concerned, while the G30 M550i is now $2,200 more than the previous model, the X3 M40i and the X4 M40i, on the other hand, carry a premium of $1,250 and $550, respectively.
