Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review 2024

Sippi Vig says

Sippi Vig

Outlander PHEV is Mitsubishi’s sole innovation in the world of hybrid cars. It comes with the world’s first DC charging feature that allows you to charge the battery by up to 80% in just 25 minutes. Outlander PHEV is available in two grades SEL S-AWC and GT S-AWC. The base grade price starts from $36,295, and top-grade price starts from $41,695. The all wheel drive powertrain is standard across the range and facilitates better ride quality and handling. This year’s Outlander comes with advanced safety features, new interior packages, updated touchscreen display, and redesigned button controls. The second-row seats are also redesigned and tailored for better passenger comfort. Also, the driver seat now comes with lumbar support. The standard driving assistance features include forward collision mitigation, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is powered by the 2.0L MIVEC 4-cylinder engine and 60 kW electric motors at both front and rear axles. The motor is connected with the 12 kWh Lithium-ion battery. It delivers an all-electric range of 22 miles. The hybrid powertrain of Outlander is fuel-efficient but slow to accelerate.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Interior & Features

Unlike the non-hybrid Outlander, the PHEV grades offer depreciated interior quality. However, when compared to the previous generation hybrid grade, this year, the quality is somehow improved. But, the cabin’s design is not up to the level of Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Kona. This year, Mitsubishi has redesigned the second-row seats, and some new features have been introduced for better passenger convenience. With new improvements to the second-row seats, now it allows more headroom and legroom for passengers. The cargo capacity of Outlander PHEV stands at 463L and is below average in the segment.

Outlander PHEV Exterior

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV reiterates the same exterior treatment as of non-hybrid trim. But as a hybrid vehicle, its design looks traditional and outdated. So, to keep it in the competition, Mitsubishi has outfitted the Outlander with the latest features. The front fascia captivates the attention with the available LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and LED fog lights. The heated power side mirrors are standard across both the grades. While the rear fascia is charged with wide LED taillights, which extend the presence of the Outlander. Outlander PHEV comes standard with the 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, whereas power sunroof is only available with the top trim.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Ride & Handling

Outlander PHEV comes standard with Super All Wheel Control, it optimizes the performance and traction by uniformly distributing the torque to all wheels. Outlander is equipped with the Macpherson strut suspension and stabilizer bar in the front and multilink suspension with stabilizer bar in the rear. This suspension system works flawlessly, it enables composed and balanced ride quality and handling. The Active Stability Control commands the anti-lock braking system and traction control to keep the vehicle stable and in control of the driver. Further, to enhance the handling of Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi has equipped it with electric power steering.

Outlander PHEV Engine & Fuel Consumption

Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid grades are powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine and two 60 kW motor decked at both front and rear axles. The electric motors are connected with the 12 kWh li-ion battery. The front motor can produce a maximum power of 60 kW and torque of 137 Nm. Whereas the rear electric motor can produce a maximum torque of 195 Nm. Under the hood, the 2.0L engine can generate a power output of 117 hp at 4,500 rpm and torque of 137 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm. This parallel powertrain can produce tremendous power of 190 hp while ensuring the top-notch fuel efficiency of 74 mpg. Outlander’s powertrain is mated with the single-speed transmission with reduction gearbox for the front, and single-speed fixed reduction transmission for the rear motor. Like the other hybrids, Outlander PHEV also comes with three drive modes — EV Drive Mode, Series Hybrid Mode, and Parallel Hybrid Mode. While on parallel mode, Outlander PHEV can tow up to 1500 pounds.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Verdict

In 2020, Mitsubishi has advanced the Outlander PHEV with minor upgrades, safety and driving assistance features. However, the exterior and interior design is not as exciting as compared to its rivals. On the bright side, the hybrid powertrain of the Outlander PHEV delivers excellent fuel economy of 74 mpg.
