Volkswagen USA to axe the Golf Alltrack & Sportwagen

With the end of 2019, both the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack and Sportwagen will also see the end of their journey in the USA. Volkswagen USA has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the two wagon vehicles in the USA as the automaker is preparing to launch three new SUVs in North America over the course of the next two years.

While Volkswagen has confirmed to discontinue both the Golf Alltrack and Sportwagen by the end of 2019, the Alltrack will continue to be produced at the Puebla facility in Mexico until the discontinuation. "SUVs have definitely assumed the mantle of family haulers from the station wagons and minivans we remember from our childhoods”, said Scott Keogh, who is the CEO and president for Volkswagen of American.

In recent times, customer interest in the USA has shifted drastically towards SUVs and crossovers. So much so that the latest sales reports suggest that around 47 % of the total vehicles sold belong to the SUV and crossover segments. Volkswagen itself has seen the sales figures of its SUVs and crossovers account for around 50% of the total trades done by the German automobile manufacturer.

"But as we look towards the future, both our expanded SUV line-up and the upcoming ID. family of electric vehicles will bring the opportunity to combine the style and space people want in a variety of ways. As the ID. Buzz concept demonstrates, the flexibility of our EV platform gives us the ability to revive body styles of the past, so anything is possible”, added Scott Keogh.

Three new SUVs which include the ID. Crozz EV, Atlas Cross Sport, and unnamed small SUV will be launched in the US market over the next two years. The last of the three will be the unnamed small SUV which will be slotted just below the Tiguan. The SUV will be launched in the year 2021.

Interestingly, the small crossover will not be based on the global T-Cross or T-Roc model. The small SUV is said to be based on the Chinese Volkswagen Tharu or the South African Tarek.
