Volkswagen’s performance-oriented EVs may get the “GTX” title
How about a performance-oriented car with the title GTX that is neither from the stable of FCA nor houses a V8 motor? It would be quite a sight, right? Well, this might just become a reality very soon as Volkswagen prepares to give the performance-oriented models of its all-electric lineup the "GTX" moniker. As per the latest developments and reports, the German automaker has registered the trademark for the title "GTX", and the new moniker is supposed to simply follow the footsteps of the likes of the GTI, GTD, and GTE titles.
Following the ID.3 and the ID.4, it will be the production model of the ID Crozz Coupe that will come out of the Volkswagen's production facilities. Underpinned by the amenable MEB platform, the performance-oriented version of the ID Crozz Coup should come out as the model with the "GTX" moniker in the form of the ID.5 GTX.
The X in "GTX" also suggests that these models will sport a twin-motor layout with one motor for each of the front and rear axles. Also, the EVs in their "GTX" avatars will wear a sportier face and flaunt many other muscle elements. While the ID.5 is quite certain to get a "GTX" model, it remains to be seen if Volkswagen offers the ID.4 and the ID.3 EVs with the "GTX" treatment.
While making an internal-combustion-engine powered car performance-oriented vehicle takes a lot of effort and modifications, Volkswagen would be able to do the same with its EVs with rather easier changes and updates to the battery management software and the electric motors. Excited for the Volkswagen "GTX" EVs? We bet you are just as excited as we are for the German automaker to roll out the performance-oriented "GTX" EVs along with the regular IDs.
