Porsche Taycan Turbo scores 288 miles in an independent range test
When we hear "electric car", "range" is the first word that pops-up inside our head, right? From the days when electric cars looked ugly and offered a single-charge range that was just unacceptable for the masses, the EVs of today have come a long way. Now, we have cars by Tesla and even by other automakers which sport single-charge ranges of over 200 and 300 miles. Another model recently joining the fleet was the Porsche Taycan Turbo.
Coming straight to today's news regarding the Porsche Taycan Turbo, the German EV has been rated by the EPA at 201 miles, while the same sedan has also received a Euro-spec WLTP rating of 279 miles. However, in an independently conducted range test, the Taycan Turbo managed to cover 288 miles on a single charge in city driving conditions, and the sedan was able to stretch up to 275 miles in a mix of city and highway driving conditions.
During the testing, the Porsche Taycan Turbo was driven in its Normal mode on two explicit routes at the same time of day during the weekdays. The driving involved "precisely coordinated" speeds which matched both the traffic flow and the maximum legal speeds on the highway. Moreover, the city driving test involved the Taycan Turbo running in the Range mode with the HVAC system turned off and speeds that matched the traffic flow.
"We had AMCI do testing beforehand. We do a lot of testing with third-party vendors for various things such as performance figures, fuel economy, interior noise, all kinds of different metrics. We actually started this process months ago, specifically because in Europe the WLTP test uses a different methodology altogether from EPA. We didn’t know exactly what the car was going to get, and we don’t like being in that position so we commissioned a company to get that number for us to better understand real-world performance,” said Porsche spokesperson Calvin Kim.
As for the EPA rating, the testing procedure followed by EPA doesn't involve driving the car on real roads. Instead, the testing is performed in a lab on a chassis dyno, and real-world city & highway driving conditions are simulated. Anyway, the Porsche Taycan Turbo will still come with a 201 miles range sticker, but the AMCI testing results have certainly done more good than bad to the hopes of the fanboys.
