Hummer could revive being a part of GM’s plan for electric pickups and SUVs

Reports are surfacing that Hummer’s reawakening is around the corner after being inactive for around 10 years. According to a reliable source, Hummer is going to be a brand among various in General Motors’s new plan to produce a new family of premium electric pickup trucks and sports-utility cars at the end of 2021. Reportedly, the new family of the trucks will be the main product of GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant in the US.

According to a labour proposal between GM and the United Auto Workers Union, the project, which is referred to as the BT1 electric truck/SUV project, is the main objective of GM’s $3 billion investment plan to make electric vans and trucks at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. Besides, it is also a part of the $7.7 billion broader investment plan in GM’s US plants over the next four years. Except for the publicly made investment by the United Auto Workers Union, there were no further details provided.

The BT1 project also includes a low-volume production of the BT1 electric pickup under the tag of a different brand. It is planned to launch it in the year 2021 and in the following year, a performance variant of the pick-up will also be added. Not these two, the automaker also has a plan to add an electric SUV in the line-up in 2023.

SUVs and pick-ups in the BT1 project will have a new electric vehicle architecture. The architecture will come with a skateboard bundled with electric motors and batteries. It is claimed as flexible and will enable the automaker to build various body types in different sizes. Besides, the architecture is also capable to provide front, rear, and all-wheel drive products.

As per the reports, the Detroit-headquartered American automaker also plans to open a battery plant near its Lordstown factory in Ohio. The plant would be a part of the  $1.3 billion investment plan in non-GM plants and it would also be a joint venture.
