Genesis G70 to receive the Hyundai Sonata N-Line’s 2.5L turbo

Back in 2017, Genesis brought the entry-level luxury sedan G70 to grab a market share in the segment that was ruled by the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and the Jaguar XE. Although it has just been just over two years since the debut of the entry-level luxury sedan, a mid-cycle refresh is about to transpire in a couple of years from now. And it shouldn't be a surprise even if Genesis decides to roll the dice even earlier.

So, what changes do we expect as a part of the mid-cycle refresh? While the exterior and interior changes are bound to happen in order to keep the G70 in check with the competition, the major update is set to come in the form of a new powerhouse. Yes, that's right. The Genesis G70 will soon ditch its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 252 hp of maximum power and a peak torque of 353 Nm.

Replacing the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with the Hyundai Sonata N-Line's 2.5-litre turbocharged inline-four mill that is capable of generating 290 hp of top power output alongside 420 Nm of peak torque. The change in the powerhouse will also bring a change in the gearbox, as the Sonata N-Line's 2.5-litre turbocharged inline-four is only compatible with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. So, the G70's six-speed manual is most probably going to miss out. But since the demand for a manual gearbox in the luxury sedan segment is already slim, this shouldn't cause too big a trouble for Genesis.

According to the sales statistics, out of the total Genesis G70 sold in the US to date, only about 4% of the trades featured a G70 sedan equipped with a manual gearbox. The Sonata N-Line will go on sale in Fall 2020 and that might also bring the performance-oriented sedan's powerhouse to the Genesis G70. In the same automotive world, recent times for Genesis have been interesting. As the South Korean automaker prepares to unveil its first-ever SUV in the form of the Genesis GV80, a couple of leaks revealing SUV's exterior and interior have started doing rounds over the internet.
