Around 100,000 Tesla cars to roll off the production line every quarter
With a total of 158,356 units sold in the first half of 2019, Tesla has taken over its own previous sales records. Moreover, the electronic vehicle manufacturer from the USA traded 95,356 vehicles in the second quarter of 2019. While Model 3 continues to be the best-selling EV for the automaker, the falling sales figures of the Model S and X have also contributed to the cause.
Speaking more of the first half (H1) of 2019 in particular, Tesla managed to sell 72,531 units of the Model 3 and 14,517 units of the Model S and X combined. Although the sales figures of the Tesla Model 3 went up by 154%, the sales of the Model X and S declined by 41%. Around 77,634 brand new Tesla 3 EVs found their homes in H1 2019, while only 17,722 Model S and X were sold during the period.
Tesla had mentioned in the past that it aims at selling around 360,000 to 400,000 cars in 2019. However, considering the number of EVs that the American automaker has managed to sell in H1 2019, Tesla needs to trade more than 200,000 cars in H2 2019. Furthermore, the EV expert will need to sell around 100,000 cars in each of the two remaining quarters of 2019, i.e., Q3 and Q4.
Around 7,000 units of the Model 3 can be produced every week at Tesla’s Fremont facility. Moving on, Tesla believes that the production plant will be able to produce 10,000 units per week of the Model S, X, and 3 combined. "The production rate of Model 3 continued to improve gradually throughout the quarter, breaking a monthly record in May and then again in June. All manufacturing equipment in Fremont has demonstrated the capability of a 7,000 Model 3 vehicles per week run rate, which we continue to work to increase. We aim to produce 10,000 total vehicles of all models per week by the end of 2019”, said the automaker.
From 1 July 2019 and 31 June 2020, Tesla wants to manufacture around 500,000 units of its EVs. The 2020 Gigafactory 3 will also contribute to the increased production in the near future. "Gigafactory Shanghai continues to take shape, and in Q2 we started to move machinery into the facility for the first phase of production there. This will be a simplified, more cost-effective version of our Model 3 line with capacity of 150,000 units per year – the second generation of the Model 3 production process. Just like in the US, the Model 3 base price of RMB 328,000 is consistent with its gas-powered competitors, even before gas savings and incentives. Given Chinese customers bought well over a half-million mid-sized premium sedans last year, this market poses a strong long-term opportunity for Tesla. We are looking forward to starting production in China by the end of this year. Depending on the timing of the Gigafactory Shanghai ramp, we continue to target production of over 500,000 vehicles globally in the 12-month period ending June 30, 2020”, added Tesla.
