Acura reveals Type S Concept at Monterey Car Week
As teased earlier, Acura has finally revealed the concept model of Type S at Monterey Car Week. The display car made its world premiere at a private gathering and will pubicly make its appearance at The Quail on August 16. Honda’s premium brand stated that the Type S Concept is a major step toward accomplishing its return to Precision Crafted Performance, which began with the introduction of the reborn NSX. Moreover, it also sets the platform for the reintroduction of Type S performance models to the Acura line-up after a decade.
Acura has announced that this concept car is the preview of the second generation TLX Type S. VP and Acura brand officer, Jon Ikeda said “The return of Type S is instrumental in our mission to return Acura to its performance roots. From bringing back the NSX to winning at the highest level of North American sports car racing and ushering-in a new generation starting with the RDX, we are revitalising Acura on the foundation of our original and authentic brand values, piece by piece.”
The carmaker says that its design crew set out to reveal the spirit of Precision Crafted Performance via proportion and stance, building a silhouette that is robust and expressive, yet neat and cohesive. The Type S Concept’s design is marked by a low stance, wide track and an expansive hood. Acura’s executive creative director, Dave Marek said that they have been dreaming about a brand-new performance-focused Acura since the Precision Concept was debuted.
The concept showcases fresh elements of Acura design such as four-lamp Jewel Eye LED headlights, “Chicane” daytime running lights, an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille, and taillights, both drawing influence from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype track car. Acura announced that they are planning to launch two Type S models in the following two years.
