2019 Tesla Model 3 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus tag
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety marked 2019 Tesla Model 3 with the highest safety pick plus grade and this is the first time in the history of electric vehicles. Tesla has hit good ratings in every crash test and recorded a superior rating in the frontal crash prevention system.
After achieving good ratings in all the six IIHS crash tests, the Tesla Model 3 earns the tag of ‘very safe car’. The standard headlights of the vehicle provided it with the competitive advantage to achieve a good rating against the other cars in the list including Chevrolet Bolt EV.
The tag of IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus comes by performing the following crash tests:
- Driver-side small overlap front
- Moderate overlap front
- Side
- Roof strength
- Head restraint tests
- Passenger-side small overlap test
Earlier to this, the vehicle was tested in 2017 and its overall rating was good, as the car rated ‘acceptable’ in drivers-side small overlap front test and rated ‘poor’ in the headlights category. Tesla has made safety a keystone of its promotion of the Model 3
The safety test also revealed the robustness of the glass-roof of the Tesla Model 3, which successfully resisted more than 20,000 pounds of force. Also, the safety restraint system of the vehicle gained high ratings in the evaluation due to the vehicle’s seats, curtain airbag and differently shaped front passenger airbag.
According to Tesla, "The safety of our customers is what matters most, which is why our active safety features and passive safety equipment comes standard on all of our cars. We’re also committed to making our cars even safer overtime via over-the-air updates, helping us ensure that all Tesla drivers have access to the best safety features available for their cars,".
The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ category was created in 2013 and presently it has 48 cars and trucks on the list.
